About the weighted random picker

A weighted random picker lets different entries have different chances. Weights are relative values rather than required percentages: a choice’s probability is its weight divided by the sum of all weights. Use it when equal chances do not match your game, prompt system, or choice list. Each generation selects one entry from the full weighted set.

How to use the weighted picker

  1. Enter at least two choices in the format “option | weight,” with one choice on each line.
  2. Use a positive numeric weight for every entry. Check the values before picking; a larger weight means a larger chance.
  3. Click Pick an option. Copy or download the selected label, or generate another independent pick from the same weighted entries.

Weighted picker example

One possible result is shown below. Your result will vary.

Input

Pizza | 3
Tacos | 2
Salad | 1

Example result

Pizza

The total weight is 6. Pizza has a 3/6 (50%) chance, Tacos 2/6 (about 33.3%), and Salad 1/6 (about 16.7%). Any one can be selected.

When to use it

Weighted choices

Express a preference without making the preferred result certain. A larger weight makes an option more likely, while other positive-weight entries remain eligible.

Game outcomes

Choose among common and rare event labels for a casual game. Decide the relative weights before running the draw.

Creative prompts

Favor some themes or activities while keeping occasional alternatives. A new generation uses the original weights again rather than adjusting them to previous picks.

Options and input rules

Input format
Separate the label and its weight with a vertical bar, for example “Blue | 2.” Use New line if labels contain commas.
Weight values
Weights must be finite numbers greater than zero and no greater than 1,000,000,000. Positive decimals are accepted. Zero, negative, and blank weights are rejected.
Relative scale
Weights do not need to add to 100. A 3:2:1 list and a 30:20:10 list express the same relative chances, subject to finite numeric precision.

How the randomization works

The picker totals the positive weights and selects a position within that total using a random value from your browser. The entry covering that position is selected, so a larger weight occupies more of the available range.

Entries and results stay in this page’s memory. This site does not upload your input or keep a saved history. A new generation replaces the displayed result; copy or download anything you want to keep before reloading or leaving the page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the chance of an option?

Divide its weight by the sum of all weights. For weights 5, 3, and 2, the first option has a 5/10 or 50% chance.

Can I use percentages as weights?

Yes, as positive numbers without percent signs. Entries weighted 70 and 30 represent 70% and 30% because their total is 100.

How do I exclude an option?

Remove its line from the input. A zero weight is not accepted. Keep at least two valid entries before making a selection.

Will ten picks exactly match the weights?

No. Weights describe probabilities, not a fixed quota. Short sequences can differ from the expected proportions because each draw is independent.
