About the random order generator

A random order generator rearranges an existing list without choosing a winner or leaving entries out. Use it when everyone needs a place in the order: taking turns, assigning a running order, reviewing ideas, or deciding which task comes first. Unlike alphabetical sorting, the result does not depend on the spelling or original position of an item.

How to use the list randomizer

  1. Enter at least two items, one on each line. You can paste a column directly from a spreadsheet.
  2. Choose New line or Comma to match your input. Turn on Remove duplicates if repeated entries should count only once.
  3. Select Randomize list. Copy the result, download a text file, or run another shuffle with the same input.

List randomizer example

One possible result is shown below. Your result will vary.

Input

Red
Blue
Green
Yellow

Example result

1. Green
2. Red
3. Yellow
4. Blue

All four colors appear once. This is one possible order, not a result that the generator will repeat on demand.

When to use it

Set a turn order

Randomize the order of players, speakers, interview questions, or activities. A complete ordered list is easier to follow than repeatedly drawing one item.

Reorder a work list

Shuffle reading lists, creative prompts, or tasks when their existing sequence is influencing what you choose first. Save the output before you start working through it.

Mix rows from a spreadsheet

Copy a single column into the input. Each nonempty line becomes one entry; information that must stay together belongs on the same line.

Options and input rules

Separators
New line preserves commas inside an item, such as “Smith, Alex.” Comma mode splits at commas and line breaks, so use it only when commas separate entries.
Duplicates
Repeated entries remain separate by default. Removal is case-sensitive: Alex and alex are different strings. Leading and trailing whitespace is trimmed and empty lines are ignored.
Numbered output
Numbering makes the order easier to follow. Turn it off before copying or downloading if you need plain text to paste into another list.

How the randomization works

The tool uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by the browser’s crypto.getRandomValues() source. It walks through the list and exchanges each entry with a randomly chosen eligible position. The settings for this tool then determine how the shuffled entries become an order, selection, or set of assignments.

Entries and results stay in this page’s memory. This site does not upload your input or keep a saved history. A new generation replaces the displayed result; copy or download anything you want to keep before reloading or leaving the page.

Frequently asked questions

Does every item appear in the shuffled list?

Yes. Every parsed entry is kept exactly once unless you enable duplicate removal. A shuffle changes positions, not the contents of the list.

Can I shuffle a list of numbers?

Yes. This randomizer treats each line as text, so numbers, names, and labels can be mixed. Use Number order if you want the input checked for numeric values.

Why did an item stay in the same position?

A random shuffle can leave individual items where they started. Short lists can even produce the same complete order. Each new shuffle is independent.

What is the largest list I can randomize?

The limit is 10,000 entries. Very long entries can make the page slower to display, so short labels are easier to review and export.
