About the random tournament bracket generator
A tournament bracket generator places participants into a knockout structure. Each opening match has two players unless one player receives a bye and advances. Later rounds are shown as winner placeholders, so you can see how matches feed into the final. This tool creates the initial bracket; it does not record scores or update winners as the tournament progresses.
How to use the tournament bracket
- Enter 2–128 players or team names. Remove accidental duplicate entries and use labels players can identify.
- Click Build bracket to randomize opening matches and assign any required byes.
- Copy or download the bracket. Use a separate record to track results and fill in the later-round winner slots.
Tournament bracket example
One possible result is shown below. Your result will vary.
Input
Alex Bea Cory Dev Eli Fran
Example result
Round 1 1. Bea — BYE (advances) 2. Eli — BYE (advances) 3. Alex vs Fran 4. Dev vs Cory Round 2 Winner of match 1 vs winner of match 2 Winner of match 3 vs winner of match 4 Final Winner of previous-round match 1 vs winner of previous-round match 2
Six entrants need an eight-slot bracket, so two receive byes. These are random placements, not performance-based seedings.
When to use it
Casual knockout competitions
Set up an opening bracket for games, club activities, or a friendly sports event. Agree on the rules for wins and ties outside the generator.
Team matchups
Enter team names instead of individuals. The bracket treats every line as one entrant regardless of the number of people represented.
Planning later rounds
See the route from opening matches to the final. Winner placeholders help show dependencies, but they are not an interactive score tracker.

How the randomization works
The tool uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by the browser’s crypto.getRandomValues() source. It walks through the list and exchanges each entry with a randomly chosen eligible position. The settings for this tool then determine how the shuffled entries become an order, selection, or set of assignments.
Entries and results stay in this page’s memory. This site does not upload your input or keep a saved history. A new generation replaces the displayed result; copy or download anything you want to keep before reloading or leaving the page.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need 4, 8, 16, or 32 players?
No. Any count from 2 to 128 is accepted. Byes fill the difference between your entrant count and the next power-of-two bracket size.
Can I seed the strongest players?
This version uses random placement. It does not accept rankings, protected seeds, or rules to keep particular players in opposite halves.
Does the tool update when someone wins?
No. Later matches contain text placeholders. Track winners and scores in your own saved copy of the bracket.
Can I make round-robin matches instead?
Not on this page. The output follows a knockout structure, where each match feeds into a later round rather than every entrant playing every other entrant.
