About the random group generator

A random group generator is useful when the size of each group matters more than the total number of groups. You might have four seats at each table, a five-person activity limit, or a small-group discussion format. Participants are shuffled and divided into balanced groups that never exceed the maximum size you choose.

How to use the group generator

  1. Add all participants as separate lines. Check that each person is represented once.
  2. Set Maximum group size between 2 and 100. The required number of groups is calculated automatically.
  3. Click Make groups and review the rosters. Copy or download the assignments before leaving the page.

Nine people require three groups. They are balanced as 3 + 3 + 3 rather than packed as 4 + 4 + 1.

When to use it

Breakout discussions

Keep conversations small enough for everyone to participate. Enter the whole attendance list and choose a maximum discussion group size.

Activities with capacity limits

Divide people for workstations, equipment, or shared tables. The selected size is an upper bound, not a target that every group must meet.

Collaborative exercises

Create similarly sized groups for short projects or peer learning. Membership is random; specialized roles or required combinations need a separate review.

Options and input rules

Maximum, not fixed, size
Groups can be smaller than your chosen limit. The generator first calculates the fewest groups that fit, then balances people across them.
Number of groups
The group count is the participant total divided by the maximum size, rounded up. Use Team generator if you want to specify the count directly.
Small participant lists
A list shorter than the maximum size produces one group. At least two entries are required, even if the size limit is much larger.

How the randomization works

The tool uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by the browser’s crypto.getRandomValues() source. It walks through the list and exchanges each entry with a randomly chosen eligible position. The settings for this tool then determine how the shuffled entries become an order, selection, or set of assignments.

Entries and results stay in this page’s memory. This site does not upload your input or keep a saved history. A new generation replaces the displayed result; copy or download anything you want to keep before reloading or leaving the page.

Frequently asked questions

Why did I choose four but get groups of three?

Four is the maximum size. If there are nine people, three groups of three are more balanced than groups of four, four, and one.

Can every group contain exactly the selected number?

Only when the participant total supports that arrangement. The tool includes everyone and favors balanced sizes rather than leaving a small remainder group.

Can I set the number of groups instead?

Yes, on Team generator. It uses a chosen team count; this tool calculates the count from a maximum group size.

Are the groups balanced by ability?

No. They are balanced only by participant count. Names provide no information about skills, experience, preferences, or required roles.
