About the random team generator
A random team generator divides a group by headcount without choosing captains or asking players to select teammates. It is useful for casual games, workshop activities, and classroom tasks where randomized membership is the goal. Balanced here means similar team sizes; the tool does not know anyone’s skill level, position, or experience.
How to use the team generator
- Add the names of everyone taking part. Use one identifiable player per line and remove accidental duplicate entries.
- Set Number of teams to at least two and no more than the number of players.
- Click Make teams. Check the assignments and copy or download all team rosters together.

Input

Example result
Team 1 Alex Dev Gus Team 2 Fran Bea Team 3 Cory Eli
Seven players make teams of three, two, and two. Everyone appears once, with no empty team.
When to use it
Casual sports and games
Split a group into a fixed number of sides. Confirm who is playing before generating so absent players do not occupy team slots.
Classroom projects
Create random project teams when there are no required combinations or exclusions. If skill balance matters, review and adjust the exported roster yourself.
Workshops and events
Divide attendees into the number of available activity stations or breakout teams. Group sizes remain close even when the total does not divide evenly.

How the randomization works
The tool uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by the browser’s crypto.getRandomValues() source. It walks through the list and exchanges each entry with a randomly chosen eligible position. The settings for this tool then determine how the shuffled entries become an order, selection, or set of assignments.
Entries and results stay in this page’s memory. This site does not upload your input or keep a saved history. A new generation replaces the displayed result; copy or download anything you want to keep before reloading or leaving the page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make exactly equal teams?
Yes, when the number of players divides evenly by the team count. Otherwise some teams have one additional player. No participant is discarded to force equal sizes.
Can I keep two players apart?
This version has no separation, captain, or fixed-player rules. It assigns participants randomly. Review the result if your activity has constraints.
Does it balance player ability?
No. Only the number of players is balanced. The generator receives names, so it cannot account for ability, experience, positions, or accessibility requirements.
Will I get different teammates every time?
Membership is shuffled again, but previous assignments are not excluded. Some or all teammates can repeat by chance, especially in small groups.
