About the random letter generator
A random letter generator chooses individual characters from the 26-letter English alphabet. It provides starting letters for games, naming exercises, and creative prompts. Every letter in the selected case is eligible on each pick. The tool produces individual letters rather than words, pronounceable strings, or passwords.
How to use the letter generator
- Set How many to the number of letters you want, from 1 to 100.
- Choose Uppercase for A–Z or Lowercase for a–z.
- Click Generate letters. Copy or download the list, turning off result numbering first if you need plain characters on separate lines.
Letter generator example
One possible result is shown below. Your result will vary.

How many: 5 Letter case: Uppercase
Example result
1. R 2. A 3. M 4. A 5. T
A can appear twice because every pick is independent. The tool does not remove a letter from the alphabet after selecting it.
When to use it
Word and category games
Pick a starting letter for a round of categories, a vocabulary exercise, or a spelling challenge. Set the round’s rules before revealing the letter.
Writing and naming prompts
Use letters as initial constraints for character names, story titles, or drawing subjects. The output supplies starting characters, not finished names.
Classroom letter practice
Generate a small set for recognition, pronunciation, or handwriting exercises. Choose the case students are practicing so the result matches the activity.
Options and input rules
How the randomization works
This tool uses the browser’s crypto.getRandomValues() source. Integer selection uses rejection sampling to avoid modulo bias. Each generated value is sampled from the eligible outcomes; the options above determine whether previous selections in the same batch remain eligible.
Entries and results stay in this page’s memory. This site does not upload your input or keep a saved history. A new generation replaces the displayed result; copy or download anything you want to keep before reloading or leaving the page.
Frequently asked questions
Are vowels and consonants equally likely?
Each individual letter has the same chance. The categories do not: there are more consonants than vowels in the standard 26-letter alphabet.
Can I generate letters without repetition?
There is no no-repeat setting on this page. To shuffle each letter once, paste the alphabet into List randomizer with one letter per line.
Can I generate a word or a password?
No. Results are separate random letters. The tool does not create words, enforce password rules, or offer a password-strength assessment.
Can I exclude particular letters?
This version uses the full English alphabet. For a custom set, enter your permitted letters in Decision wheel or List randomizer.
