About the random seating order generator

A random seating order generator creates a simple table-by-table guest list. It shuffles participants, fills tables up to the chosen capacity, and numbers seats within each table. It is useful for informal events and activities where you want to mix people without manually placing every guest. It does not model a room layout or account for seating preferences.

How to use the seating order

  1. Enter every guest as a separate entry. Use full names or initials if first names repeat.
  2. Set Seats per table from 1 to 100. The number of tables is calculated from the guest total.
  3. Click Assign seats. Copy or download the table lists, then use them to prepare your own seat labels or room plan.

Five guests require two three-seat tables. The first table is filled and the second has one unused seat.

When to use it

Informal dinners

Mix a guest list across tables for a gathering. Review the generated arrangement for any practical seating needs before publishing it.

Workshops and training

Create table assignments to bring different participants together. The output labels people and seats without requiring a drawing of the room.

Single-seat order

Set a suitable table capacity when you want one continuous seating list. A capacity of one assigns each participant to a separate numbered table.

Options and input rules

Table capacity
All tables use the same capacity. Tables fill in order after the guest list is shuffled, so the final table can be smaller than the others.
Seat numbers
Numbering restarts at one for each table. These are labels within a table, not physical coordinates or a circular seating diagram.
Seating constraints
This version does not support reserved seats, households, accessibility needs, or rules about who sits together. Review the export for those requirements.

How the randomization works

The tool uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by the browser’s crypto.getRandomValues() source. It walks through the list and exchanges each entry with a randomly chosen eligible position. The settings for this tool then determine how the shuffled entries become an order, selection, or set of assignments.

Entries and results stay in this page’s memory. This site does not upload your input or keep a saved history. A new generation replaces the displayed result; copy or download anything you want to keep before reloading or leaving the page.

Frequently asked questions

Does it balance the number of guests at each table?

It fills each table up to capacity, with any remaining guests at the last table. Use Group generator if you prefer similarly sized groups instead.

Can I keep couples or friends together?

There are no keep-together rules. Every entry is assigned independently as part of the shuffled guest list.

Can each table have a different capacity?

No. Seats per table applies to the whole arrangement. Different table sizes would need a manual adjustment after export.

Does it generate a printable floor plan?

It generates text lists of tables and seat numbers. Download the result and use it as the basis for a separate printable plan or seating chart.
